Types of Offshore Wind Towers
Key Plant Automation specialises in hard automation solutions tailored to optimise the manufacture of offshore wind tower foundations. With a deep understanding of the unique challenges in foundation production, we leverage cutting-edge robotics, machining capabilities, and intelligent systems to deliver streamlined processes and ensure consistent quality. From monopiles to floating platforms, our solutions meet the stringent requirements of various foundation types, empowering manufacturers with confidence in safety, sustainability, and cost-efficiency.

Offshore Towers
These are the support structures that hold the wind turbine above the water surface. Offshore towers can vary in design, including monopiles, jackets, and floating foundations.
Monopiles
Monopiles are large steel tubes that are driven into the seabed to support offshore wind turbines. They are typically used in shallow to moderate water depths (up to approximately 30 meters) and are driven into the seabed using specialised equipment. Monopiles provide a stable foundation for the wind turbine tower and help transmit the loads from the structure to the seabed.
Transition Pieces
Transition pieces connect the monopile or other foundation structure to the wind turbine tower. They provide a smooth transition between the foundation and the tower, ensuring structural integrity and stability. Transition pieces are often equipped with platforms or access ladders to facilitate maintenance and servicing of the wind turbine.
Jackets
Jacket structures consist of steel lattice frames that support the wind turbine tower above the water surface. Jackets are typically used in deeper water depths where monopiles may not be feasible. They are installed by lowering them onto the seabed and securing them in place with piles or suction buckets. Jackets provide excellent stability and can withstand the forces of waves and currents.
Floating Foundations
Floating foundations are support structures that allow wind turbines to be installed in deep water where fixed foundations like monopiles or jackets are not practical. These foundations use buoyancy to keep the wind turbine stable and are tethered to the seabed to prevent drifting. Floating foundations can be designed as spar buoys, semi-submersibles, or tension leg platforms, depending on the specific site conditions.
Nacelle Structures
The nacelle is the housing at the top of the wind turbine tower that contains the generator, gearbox, and other essential components of the turbine. Nacelle structures are typically made of steel and are designed to withstand the harsh offshore environment while housing sensitive equipment. They also include features such as ventilation systems, access doors, and maintenance platforms to facilitate operation and maintenance activities.
